Fashion Lessons You Should Know

Do you sometimes feel stressed about not being fashionable? Do you feel that trends are moving too fast even for you who love fashion? Are you lost among so many must-haves? Don’t worry, it’s not worth losing your head over fashion. Read on and learn a few lessons that will make you feel much better.

  1. Don’t stress about following trends

The trend cycle is so fast that no garment is in or out for long. And certainly not to the point of stressing yourself out. In fact, the fashion business puts such a variety of styles at your disposal that you can find almost anything you want as long as you put in the time.

  1. Your “body type” does not dictate what trends look good on you.

People like to say that certain trends only look good on tall, thin girls (midi skirts, crop tops, baggy pants…) but that’s not always true. If fit, proportion, and style are balanced, then body size won’t matter. Clearly, if a dress is designed for a model’s body, it’s not going to look the same on a girl like you and me, but with some alterations, it can look good. And if it doesn’t look good, it’s not your problem, it’s the dress. A woman’s body is never a problem.

  1. Self-confidence makes clothes look better.

It’s true that if you feel good about yourself, you’ll look fabulous from the outside, but don’t overdo it. The reality is, even your favorite dress can look sad if it’s wrinkled, you’ve just put your hair in a ponytail with a little greasy hair and you’ve put on red tights. It’s when you take a little time to, for example, paint your nails, that you really look spectacular.

  1. People will only know your clothes are cheap if you say so.

Many designer clothes are so overpriced that the only way to tell the difference between a mass brand and a high-end brand, at least at first glance, is to look at the label.

  1. Logos and other attention-grabbing details make it cheaper rather than more expensive.

Filling yourself from head to toe with logos is in pretty bad taste and, besides, you’ll look like an ad with legs. If you’ve seen it in a fashion editorial, rest assured it was done with a sense of irony. If a belt has a giant H on it because it’s from Hermès, a handbag is splashed with the brand’s name or a pair of heels have red soles, they may attract attention but they don’t add anything to the design of the piece. Wear logos if that’s what you like but not as a sign of status.

  1. Fashion is about following trends but style is about finding the look that suits you best.

You will never be satisfied chasing trends. Find what really works for you and stick with it.

  1. That something feels good enhances the look more than anything else.

Seriously, the most important factor that makes a garment look good is that it feels good. That’s why stylists and fashion houses spend a lot of time fixing and pinning clothes for photo shoots. Have you ever noticed that clothes almost always fit you well in the shoulders, chest, hips, and butt? That’s because it’s easier for a tailor to cut something or take it to waist, arm, or leg length than it is to enlarge a garment.

  1. Shopping is not the answer

The success of the fashion industry lies in convincing you that you need more clothes when in fact you already have enough. In any case, what you need to change is your relationship with the clothes you have, try new (and surprising) combinations, reserve something to go out at night and something to go to work…

  1. If you have a budget to buy

Less is more and, in this case, avoid frills. Think of it this way, the simpler the garment, the less likely you are to mess up your look. Save money by buying basics from affordable brands. It’s hard to see the difference between a 10€ cotton t-shirt and a 90€ one.

  1. You can change the way people see you just by changing the style of your dress.

We all make snap judgments about others based on their appearance, but even an intense first impression can be changed. People like to think that just by looking at you, they will know everything about you. However, it’s hard to keep up a first impression of disorganization and sloppiness when that person starts coming to work looking pristine. In short, you can get indignant about how unfair judgments are based on appearance, or you can take control by taking advantage of the image you project.
